Anthropometric Measurement Program – Shree Shanta Secondary School, Pokhara
Background
Regular health assessments in schools play a vital role in monitoring children’s growth and early detection of vision problems—both of which significantly impact learning and development.
YLCGH Nepal team conducted an Anthropometric Measurement and Visual acuity check up Program at Shree Shanta Secondary School. The initiative aimed to record the height, weight and visual acuity of students and empower the teachers with the knowledge to conduct similar measurements independently in the future.
Objective
To measure and record the height and weight of all students from Grade 1 to Grade 10.
To measure visual acuity of students from Grade 3 to Grade 10.
To teach the teachers proper techniques for measuring height and weight as well as visual acuity for continuous monitoring.
To establish a baseline for tracking students’ growth over time.
Materials Used
Weighing scales
Stadiometers and height charts
Record sheets
Snellen chart
Methodology
Phase 1: Data Collection
The team measured the height and weight of all 371 students systematically.
Students were guided through the measurement process in small batches to ensure accuracy and efficiency
All measurements were recorded and compiled for future reference.
Phase 2: Teacher Training
Teachers were trained on the proper use of weighing scales, stadiometers and Snellen
chart.
Demonstrations were provided on positioning, calibration, and interpretation of measurements.
Teachers practiced measuring under supervision to ensure they could replicate the process accurately in the future.
Outcome
1. Baseline Measurements:
The height and weight as well as visual acuity of all 371 students were successfully
recorded.
This data will serve as a baseline for monitoring their growth during subsequent visits.
2. Capacity Building:
Teachers gained confidence and proficiency in using anthropometric tools.
They are now equipped to carry out routine measurements independently.
Observations
1. Teacher Engagement:
Teachers were enthusiastic about learning the techniques and actively participated in the training sessions.
2. Student Interaction:
Students were curious about the process and showed eagerness to understand their growth metrics
